World Elephant Day
West and central African elephants are nearly gone and poaching has turned to East Africa. If the dirty business of selling ivory continues at its current pace, elephants will be extinct in fifteen years. Over 150,000 elephants have been killed in the past 5 years.
The lucky elephants in the capable care of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust are victims of this poaching epidemic and also misfortune. Some have found themselves at the bottom of a well or ditch, but many more have families that were murdered right before their eyes- a traumatizing experience for these baby elephants.
When visiting Nairobi, travelers can attend the mid-day feeding at the nursery and watch the caretakers feed the little ellies their lunch while learning about the organization and some of the animals. Guests who sponsor an elephant are also able to visit in the evening and interact with the elephants after they return to their stables from the day's adventures and prepare for bed.
